We seek to follow Adam Smith's "theory of moral sentiments" which articulated civic and economic morality, and motivating theories of contemporary economists such as Professor Stefano Zamigni and Professor Johan J. Graafland - taking into consideration, factors that matter to most of us: trust, reciprocity, belonging, relationships, the well being of individuals and the public good, redistribution of wealth, justice, ethics, and social capital. We make these factors central to how business organisations should and can operate. We believe in contributive justice. Contributive justice, as opposed to distributive justice, is the responsibility each of us has to contribute to civil society, and to our collective well being.
We do try to match a person's obligations with his or her capabilities and role in society. We believe that we need practical and insightful managers and business leaders to guide our planetary challenges, and who are ready to pay attention to the needs of all of its inhabitants. We are happy that there have been extraordinary strides in human well-being over the past 6 to 7 decades, whilst the human population has grown by almost 40 to 45%. We are happy that global population stands today at around 7.5 billion and is expected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050, but we are saddened to learn that many millions of people still lead lives of extreme deprivation. Worldwide, around 6 million children under the age of 5 still die, and more than half of those deaths are due to easy-to-treat conditions like diarrhoea and malaria. Over 70 million young men and women are unable to find work. Deprivations such as these have been perpetuated by growing insecurities and inequalities. The 2008 financial meltdown sent shock waves through the world economy, stealing many millions of people of their jobs, homes, savings and security. Meanwhile, human activity is putting unprecedented stress on our planetary home and adding the deepening degradation of Earth's support systems. Despite these challenges, one thing is clear - with the right economic mindset, we can all play a defining role to tackle humanity's interwoven challenges, and create a new economic story. We need a narrative picture of our shared economic future that is fit for achieving the highest life-giving, sustainable-growth driven by respectful businesses that have a purpose far more inspiring than merely maximising shareholder value; and a growing number of enterprises are finding out that by engaging our consultancy services, they give themselves one.
Such a values-driven mission is what we encourage all our clients to embrace. The fundamental question is whether we can restore the common good, and rebuild trust in the system. The answer is yes we can. We can create a type of business that is socially and environmentally regenerative by design, and do something good for the public good.
