Nautical Tourism & Healthcare

Although we work with business organisations in a number of economic sectors and industries, these past years have demonstrated our swift collective and concerted responses in offering CFO consulting services supporting clients within the Travel, Hospitality and Tourism Industry, and the Healthcare Industry.

Through all our network, we  foster cooperation and intercultural communication and exchange, for sustainable development in the Euro-Mediterranean region. We do our part to show how clients engaged in tourism,  and in particular, Mediterranean nautical tourism,  can help save the lives of thousands of people diagnosed with cancer in the Euro-Mediterranean region.  We hope that we will raise awareness of the problem and help to get new strategies in place more quickly and effectively, to build synergies and collaborate in implementing projects and initiatives across the Mediterranean region with a view to capitalise on the tourism potential to advance sustainable economic growth, as well as everyone's right to healthcare, particularly among women in Mediterranean countries.  Individuals and firms are invited to put forward their own ideas for raising money and awareness of the cause.

The UK and other EU countries, are the world leaders in medical research, but not enough of the results are being translated from the scientists’ lab to the patients’ hospital bedside. Many people are missing out on treatment that could possibly help them, and this is what we want to address.

Mediterranean Nautical Tourism

We are experienced in the international hospitality, travel  and tourism industry, and over these past years, we have been serving and supporting a number of international companies, operating in the marine and nautical tourism.

Nautical and maritime tourism is the  most important sub sector of tourism. It is estimated to employ 3 million people and has the potential for the creation of significant economic impact through the creation of more jobs and sustainable Blue growth. The Mediterranean is one of the most important regions in the world for nautical and coastal tourism with outstanding natural and biodiversity features. We believe that growth prospects for this sector are indeed encouraging, especially for the Mediterranean. We also believe that finding a balance between tourism growth and the risks associated with the stresses of growth, is indeed a challenge.

We are proud to have offered professional accounting and financial management support to an 85 metre superyacht having international yachtmasters, ship's officers (navigation and engineering), and crew qualified under the IMO Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) convention, as well as hotel and catering staff, interior crew in all roles, and deckhands.  Apart from keeping proper books of accounts, prepare payroll, and monthly management accounts, we also deal with tax preparation and planning, and also assist in the drafting of Seafarers' Employment Agreements, ensuring that the yacht crew's employment contracts are in line with the Maritime Labour Convention on Seafarers' Employment Agreements (SEAs). Through servicing this fascinating yacht company, we are bringing in new perspectives to service excellence, as we continue to expand our portfolio of highly reputable clients, that can give a significant boost to nautical and maritime tourism, that has the potential for the creation of more jobs and sustainable growth of the Blue Economy.

We strongly believe that :

 - Malta's geographic position in the Mediterranean is one of our strongest assets, which has turned tourism into a main pillar of Malta's economic structures, making it a key provider to the Malta's wealth, as evidenced by last year's all-time record of almost 2.3 million visitors and a record of 2 billion euros in tourist expenditure.

 - For decades, the Mediterranean has served as the ideal tourism destination, and Malta's renewed marketing and brand image of a Mediterranean island destination represents an added value that is proving to be very attractive to the growing marine and nautical tourism, with a rich cultural offer. Indeed, Mediterranean tourism, which includes Malta, is particularly characterised by the strong dependence on the richness of the blue Mediterranean Sea, and on European flows which continue to nurture this economic sector that represents an important source of employment and investment.

We have the potential to continue to promote Malta as a leader in the Mediterranean, using tourism as a vehicle for peace and stability in the region.  As international tourism increases to the Mediterranean region, so will opportunities, however, pressures on the natural and cultural assets will also increase in the host destinations. So we help business organisations ensure that tourism is supported by sustainability measures in the long term.

Over time, we have collaborated with the Malta Tourism Authority and with the government of Malta, with the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA), and with the Malta Association of Hospitality Executives (MAHE) , on a number of initiatives. We have collectively supported the setting up of a Mediterranean Tourism Foundation through participation in the Mediterranean Tourism Forum,  and supported the initiatives of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).  We are happy to work with all those who promote projects that continue to invest in Euro-Mediterranean co-operation in the areas of water, research and innovation, energy efficiency, and the blue economy,  sharing the view that there is no development without security and no security without development.

We aim to strengthen the security-development dimension in order to create the appropriate environment conducive to socio-economic development and to address in a comprehensive and balanced manner the challenges of the region.

Because of its geographical composition, institutional governance and working methodology, Malta as a member of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is the ideal platform to support organisations that are committed to contribute towards the priorities of both the EU  and the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries.

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is an intergovernmental organisation of 43 countries from Europe and the Mediterranean Basin: the 28 member states  of the European Union  and 15 Mediterranean partner countries  from North AfricaWestern Asia and  Southeast Europe.   It was created in July 2008 at the Paris Summit for the Mediterranean, with a view to reinforcing the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (Euromed) that was set up in 1995 and known as the Barcelona Process.

The team at E.D. Consultancy Services Ltd. offers diverse and vibrant experience, and a number of business management and support services that encourage businesses to grow in the nautical and maritime tourism sector.

We identify and support concrete regional cooperation projects that enhance partnerships and interactions in the region between promoters, partners and beneficiaries through the scaling up effect and development of innovative initiatives. We act as a catalyst of projects, accompanying promoters throughout the project life-cycle and enhancing regional dialogue to create synergies for partnerships.

Healthcare

In the hospitality and tourism sector, there are some required characteristics that foster synergies and promote concrete initiatives related to tourism in order to enhance sustainable development, economic growth, social inclusiveness, decent employment, SMEs development and poverty alleviation.

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) brings together all 28 countries of the European Union and 15 countries from the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, to respond to the region's current pressing challenges. Inspired by the work of UfN, we offer guidance and support to those organisations who wish to build synergies and collaborate in implementing projects and initiatives across the Mediterranean region with a view to capitalise on the tourism potential to advance sustainable economic growth, environmental protection, as well as everyone's right to healthcare, particularly among women in Mediterranean countries.

We fully endorse UfM strategic priority to enhance the role of women in Euro-Mediterranean societies in an effort to contribute to the long-term sustainable development of the region and women’s empowerment which is an essential precondition for the prevention and control of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) among women. So we are working towards developing further benefits for the promotion of the following comprehensive action plan for women empowerment in the Mediterranean region for the coming years.

These are some of the opportunities that can give a significant boost to synergy between Mediterranean tourism and healthcare, to bring the change we want to see, to improve everyone's right to healthcare, particularly among women in Mediterranean countries:

  • Cervical and breast cancer are one of the leading causes of mortality amongst women, globally.

  • In the Euro-Mediterranean region, approximately 192,000 women die every year because of cervical and breast cancer. Prevention and early screening are critical to prevent this type of cancer and save thousands of women’s lives in the region.

Since February, 2018, The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) have been engaged to promote cervical and breast cancer prevention and early screening through the project “Women’s Right to Health (WoRTH)”, as part of the UfM Women’s Empowerment Agenda. The project, implemented by the Centre for Cancer Prevention of Piedmont, in Italy, as WHO Collaborating Centre for Cancer Early Diagnosis and Screening (CPO/WHOCC), aims at supporting UfM Member States to develop national plans to increase access to services to prevent and manage women cancers such as cervical and breast cancer. Morocco, Albania and Montenegro have already started with national pilot projects. In the framework of the project, over 45,000 disadvantaged women (aged 25-65) are expected to be tested for cervical and breast cancer and sensitized to the risks and the importance of cervical and breast cancer prevention. More than 300 health professionals involved in the early detection/screening programs will be trained.

Cancer affects everyone in different ways, including caregivers. After diagnosis or treatment, some people may have to give up their occupation because the symptoms mean they cannot work. In other cases, people will be able to carry on working, but they may still need some time off. Some people may look to work as a way to keep their lives as normal as possible.

Combining worldwide and regional efforts and mobilising networks with a view to sharing knowledge and experiences is crucial to prevent cervical and breast cancer.  The UfM is determined to build synergies in the field of women’s empowerment, including access to health, in order to facilitate stakeholders dialogue and cooperation and promote specific projects such as WoRTH.

The UfM joins efforts with the World Health Organisation, the CPO/WHOCC and the Ministry of Health of Morocco to promote women’s rights to early cervical and cancer screening in Marrakech under the framework of the Conference of the Pan-Arabian Research Society of Gynaecological Oncology (PARSGO). About 50 participants will represent the ministries of health of the Mediterranean countries, national, regional and international stakeholders and experts in the field of cancer prevention. This will provide the opportunity to strengthen the network of cancer prevention in the region; identify specific means of stakeholders’ engagement at the local, regional and international levels; share experience and best practices, as well as assess the possibility of involving additional countries from the region in the project.

Breast cancer is the most frequent cancer among women, impacting over 1.5 million women each year, and also causes the greatest number of cancer-related deaths among women, according the World Health Organization. Likewise, an estimated 528,000 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer worldwide in 2012, half of whom died from the disease. In the UfM Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries, more than 19,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 212,600 with breast cancer every year, while 7,800 and 62,200 respectively die. In the EU-28, breast and cervical cancer’s mortality predictions for the year 2017 were estimated at 122,000 women.

Public health measures such as the establishment of cancer prevention and early detection programs – through increased cervical and breast cancer screening, education programs promoting healthier lifestyles, and the introduction of HPV tests and vaccination- are critical to reduce global cancer disparities, particularly among women in Mediterranean countries.

Through active collaboration, we support and encourage Euro-Mediterranean businesses to engage in-country, South-to-South, and North-to-South cooperation through the strengthening and consolidation of a network on cancer prevention, fostering the exchange of updated knowledge and information, best practices and cancer prevention strategies tailored to local economic, social and cultural characteristics.
